I think people are underestimating how much of a generational talent Mao is. (…) Mao isn’t just successful because she’s a jumper – she’s a phenomenal spinner, has the best landing positions in the field and great consistency and quality on her 3-3s, as well as having very strong (though not the strongest) PCS. The other juniors with 3As are much weaker in those areas, so she’ll still have an advantage even if she loses the 4T.

みんな麻央がどれほど世代的な才能か過小評価してると思う。彼女はジャンパーだから強いだけじゃない――驚異的なスピナーで、着氷姿勢はフィールド随一、3回転＋3回転の安定感と質も素晴らしく、PCS（演技構成点）も最高峰とまではいかなくても十分に高い。3Aを跳べる他のジュニアたちはこの辺りがずっと弱い。だから4Tを失っても優位は変わらないよ。

Her biggest strengths are mental: her ability to be consistent and deliver under pressure. (…) And her spins of course. (…) I won’t be surprised if her win streak is broken sometime (which is totally normal) but she will be a strong contender none the less, assuming she can stay healthy 🤞

2-3 triple axels between the two programs and pretty much 100% triple-triples is going to be medal threat even if her quad is unreliable or she completely removes it. (…) I think she’ll be able to win gold in at least one of her assignments.

2つのプログラム合わせて2〜3本のトリプルアクセル、ほぼ100%決まる3回転＋3回転。これだけあればクワッドが不安定でも、いっそ外しても、十分メダル争いに絡める。少なくとも出場する大会の1つでは金を獲れると思う。

this season (25/26) her best total score was 218, which wouldn’t be enough for the Olympic podium (…). Mao is already showing some signs of deterioration, she essentially lost her 4T (last time she landed it was in August 2025 – nearly a year ago) and has “only” just a 3A. So long story short imo at best she’s gonna be competing with the ladies who have a consistent 3A, she’s not gonna be a world breaker like some people hype her to be.

今季（25/26）の自己ベスト総合は218点で、これだと五輪表彰台には届かない。麻央にはすでに陰りが見え始めていて、実質4Tを失っている（最後に決めたのは2025年8月＝もう1年近く前）。残ったのは“ただの”3Aだけ。要するに、よくても安定した3Aを持つ選手たちと競る位置で、一部が騒ぐような“世界をぶち壊す存在”にはならないと思う。

To be fair to Mao, the 218 score is limited by junior requirements, which cap her below what she’d be able to score as a senior (no 3A and mandatory loop instead of flip in the short, no step sequence in the free)

麻央のために公平に言うと、218点はジュニアのルール制約で頭打ちになってる。ジュニアはショートで3Aが跳べず、フリップの代わりにループが必須、フリーにステップシークエンスが無い。シニアならもっと出せるはず。

To a certain extent yes, but 218 score was an outlier, the 2nd best score in international competition was 208, and even with the junior requirements that’s not enough to dominate the senior scene

ある程度はね。でも218点は外れ値で、国際大会での2番目の得点は208点だった。ジュニアのルール制約を加味しても、シニアを支配するには足りないよ。

If we hold everything equal Mao’s scoring from last year would put her: 7th in average total event score; 3rd in average event BV; 2nd in average event TES; 17th in average event PCS. Some of these marks can improve. I think she has a good chance of success, but there are some risks attached. It’s not a sure fire bet.

仮に全部そのまま当てはめると、昨季の麻央の得点は――1大会平均の総合得点で7位、基礎点（BV）平均で3位、技術点（TES）平均で2位、でも演技構成点（PCS）平均では17位。いくつかは伸びる余地がある。成功の可能性は十分あると思うけど、リスクも付きまとう。確実な賭けじゃない。

What a lot of people are forgetting is that junior pcs are nerfed. She will get an immediate boost to her pcs once she debuts as a senior. Happened to Ami (…). The real challenge will be lasting till 2030.

みんな忘れてるけど、ジュニアのPCSは抑えられてる。シニアデビューした途端にPCSは跳ね上がるはず。中井亜美もそうだった。本当の課題は2030年（＝次の五輪）まで保つことだよ。

The junior to senior transition can be unpredictable. Jia Shin is a great example of that – four straight world junior silver medals and very high expectations (…) but inconsistency killed her momentum (…). On the other hand, Mao having a 3A and generally being very solid on her other triples is going to be a huge advantage. Personally, I think she’ll be successful this season.

ジュニアからシニアへの移行は読めない。シン・ジアがいい例で、世界ジュニア銀メダル4連続と高い期待を背負ってきたのに、ムラが勢いを削いだ。一方で麻央は3Aを持ち、他の3回転も総じて安定しているのが大きな武器になる。個人的には、今季は成功すると思う。

Her jumps are good but her 4T and 3A looked shaky in the last season (…). She’s also coached by Mie Hamada who doesn’t have the greatest track record in terms of longevity (Rika, Marin….) but we’ll just have to wait and see. (…) I know everything I’ve said above sounds quite pessimistic but I’m very excited for her to join the senior ranks.

ジャンプは良いけど、4Tも3Aも昨季は不安定に見えた。それに浜田美栄コーチに師事しているのも気がかりで、彼女は選手寿命という点では最高の実績とは言えない（紀平梨花、本田真凜……）。まあ見守るしかない。だいぶ悲観的に聞こえたかもしれないけど、彼女がシニアに上がるのはすごく楽しみだよ。

more realistically i think she’ll be like sasha t: extremely dominant as a junior, always a podium contender as a senior but never a shoe-in for gold, struggling a little. based on talent/potential i think shimada is one of the best, though

もっと現実的に言えば、サーシャ・トゥルソワ型になると思う。ジュニアでは圧倒的、シニアでは常に表彰台候補だけど金の鉄板とまではいかず、少し苦戦するタイプ。ただ才能・ポテンシャルで言えば、島田はトップクラスの一人だと思う。

Lowkey feel 50/50. She could either come out and win everything (be the next grand slam winner) or come out and fail under the pressure of being a senior.

正直50:50な気がする。出てきて全部勝つ（次のグランドスラム達成者になる）かもしれないし、シニアのプレッシャーに押し潰されるかもしれない。

I just hope she stays healthy.
