Seriously, we are minions. It’s humiliating that only Japan and Australia can compete with the rest of the world.

Obviously a decline – in 2022 three of six qualified for R16 when it was much harder to qualify. This year its two out of nine in an easier format.

It’s not really a decline but they got too many slots relative to their strength in comparison with the other regions, so most of them became free fodder.

Consider 2022, the allotment of slots were: AFC 6, CAF 5, CONCACAF 4, CONMEBOL 4, OFC 0, UEFA 13. In 2026, after earning it in the groups, the slots are: AFC 2, CAF 9, CONCACAF 3, CONMEBOL 5, OFC 0, UEFA 13.

I was truly expecting Asian teams to do more this year. Shockingly disappointing, especially from South Korea. That being said, amazing that all of the African teams except Tunisia made it through.

Japan tends to be one of the better Asian countries in the WC. They’re still in that tier of countries that are good enough to regularly get out of the group, but not good enough to beat the really elite countries (kind of like Mexico), but that’s honestly the best that most countries can hope for.

Australia used to be in the Oceania confederation, but they left to join the Asian confederation specifically because they wanted to play in more competitive matches. OFC was Australia (28m people), New Zealand (5m) and then a bunch of microstates with <1m people. This meant that most of their international matches were essentially against amateur club level teams… They didn’t like that, so they moved to AFC.

As a Japanese fan, we’ve faced Australia so many times that they honestly feel like part of the Asian football family to me. I feel a strong sense of familiarity with them. Of course, I know Australia is a Western country.

The travel restrictions worked heavily against them… they had to travel from Mexico to the US on match days and return immediately after. … They were also on the verge of qualifying until Austria scored a late goal right at the death, which changed everything.

Jordan should have went through. They easily could have had 4 points out of this group and gave up leads in the games vs Austria and Algeria. They scored in every game too

You can see some potential in a few of the newly qualified Asian nations (notably Iraq and Uzbekistan) but unless that potential is properly developed, they will continue to be fodder in the upcoming World Cups.

The reason AFC is weakest are the culprits that did not even play in this World Cup… No other than China and India. When the 2 most populous countries in the world cannot qualify in the weakest region, that’s a major problem for the confederation.

How does China and India population matter here? They’re just another team that didn’t qualify. Look at Iceland, Cape Verde or Uruguay – you don’t need a massive population

How come India and China produce so many chess and math and science Olympiad teams… but Brazil or Argentina or Morocco don’t really have that? Why can’t those countries compete against India in cricket or wrestling or against China in weightlifting and ping pong?

I grew up in China. I can choose to play football and the highest likelihood is that I ended up only making a thousand bucks a month… Alternatively, I can study hard… and become an engineer, who can make 100k USD a year. Even if I like football, the economic reality says otherwise.

The only real competitors in AFC are Japan, SK, Aus and Iran. SK had a terrible manager. Iran has a war going on. So AFC probably performing about as expected… So what’s the complaint?
