Third means you have a chance at playing a 1st place team though which could be France or Germany. There’s effectively no difference in going out at R32 or R16 besides pride so losing on purpose is probably not a good idea

Japan has never won in the World Cup knockout stage. Honestly, I feel they might as well take the 50% France / Germany gamble instead of 100% Brazil, and try for that goal. Japan has too much of the goal difference advantage to fail as the 3rd place.

Brazil is nowhere near the worst team you can face. Going third would risk to make things worse. I don’t think Brazil would be more difficult for Japan than the Netherlands were honestly. And they tied with them. I can’t speak for them, but if I were them, I’d just go for Brazil rather than risk getting someone worse.

Brazilian playstyle seems especially effective against Japan. They’re ideal to dealing with technical and control teams, but Brazil doesn’t appear as such. They have this unpredictable street football game that is awkward for Japan. Brazil may be better at sowing chaos and dealing with it. Brazil is the football culture Japan tries to be.

I mean have a look at south korea today. They had so many passes, heaps of possession but nothing to show for it. 2 shots on target in 90 minutes of football. The stats clearly show they were playing safe and aiming for a draw. Because they have done that. Its possible that south korea now miss the knock-out stages.
